Free Fire India mechanics evolution: skills, Gloo Maker and Honor Score
How character skills, Gloo Maker, Shotgun and SMG range roles, rescue skills, Honor Score and ranked maps changed, and why India-server sync needs its own check.
This page explains “why old guides contradict the official site’s old pages”. The basis is Garena’s developer notes and patch blogs, which are first-party official material: they can prove that officials explained something a certain way and changed it a certain way at a point in time, but they cannot prove that the India version works that way today. Read every item together with its effective date, and check the client before relying on it for current behaviour.
What can developer notes prove, and what can’t they prove?
What they can prove: what design reasons officials gave in a given update’s announcement, which mechanics were changed, and what the rule boundaries were at the time. This kind of text is the most reliable starting point for studying how a mechanic evolved, closer to the original intent than second-hand guides and video commentary.
What they cannot prove:
- Effective date and regional scope. The date of a global-version announcement is not the India-version effective date, and it does not mean the India version synced the same version.
- Current state. A historical announcement only explains its own point in time and cannot be assembled into today’s rules.
- Actual client behaviour. An announcement is design intent; actual running behaviour still depends on the game itself.
Evidence level: Global reference — Every item on this page comes from global-version official announcements and developer notes, not India-version testing; whether the India version synced each one has to be checked item by item.
Why has the character system changed so many times?
The character system is the most heavily edited area; the “level 8”, “paid upgrade” and “LINK” in old guides are all historical states:
| Time / version | Official record | Effect on writing material |
|---|---|---|
| 2019-12-10 Winterlands | Added a 4th skill slot, adjusted upgrade and fragment costs | Old guides that still list upgrade costs cannot be used for the current version |
| 2021 World Series | Character level cap changed from 8 to 6, upgrades no longer cost Gold or Diamonds; awakened skills include the original skill effect | “Level 8” and “paid upgrade” are historical states |
| 2023-01-11 OB38 developer notes | Skill slots opened free by default, with combo recommendations and presets | Old tutorials about skill slot unlock costs may already be invalid |
| 2023-03-08 developer notes | Announced removal of LINK, skills unlocked with Gold instead, skill level differences removed | Old tables listing full values for six-level skills cannot be treated as current |
The 2023 developer explanation also gives a methodology: reworks look not only at pick rate but also at win rate and how players feel about skill strength; when numeric tuning is not enough, the mechanic itself is changed.
Chrono is the case officials named: early on you could shoot out of the force field, and later that ability was removed. So even if a character detail page still says “can shoot out”, it should not be used directly as a basis for a current guide. The full character table is in Character skills master list, and the system context is in Skill system and combo evolution.
Why does Gloo Maker exist?
The 2023-05-25 developer note gives the reason: early on, whether you could find Gloo Walls while looting, and later the difference in player inventories, noticeably affected the outcome of fights. So a time-based, upgradable Gloo Maker was introduced, with upgrades driven by combat and chips.
| Stage | Mechanic change |
|---|---|
| Early 2023 Big Head mode | Five-level maker first offered in a specific mode |
| 2023-05-30 | Everyone in BR has a maker, the level is kept after revival, damage/time/chips provide experience |
| OB50 (2025-07-30) | Adjusted production, carry cap and upgrade speed |
| OB54 (2026-06-23) | Adjusted per-level caps again, plus quantities gained from eliminations and loot |
This timeline explains exactly why guides disagree about “where Gloo Walls come from” and “how many you can store” — each corresponds to a different version.
Things to watch when testing: fix the mode, version, maker level and pet, and do not treat Training Ground rules as BR rules. There is also a version-dependent interaction between Mr. Waggor and the maker, which needs checking separately.
How were Shotgun and SMG range roles defined?
The 2023-05-24 developer article positioned Shotguns as extreme-close-range burst and SMGs as close-to-mid range; officials at the time considered Shotguns still too strong at longer range, so range and ease of use were adjusted while the performance of some SMGs was improved.
This is the balance intent of that moment, and it cannot be used to prove the current win rate or ranking of each gun. When writing weapon guides, range, tolerance for consecutive hits, moving fire and reloading should be tested separately — a single “damage” number is not enough to judge whether a gun suits every situation. See Range roles, recoil and attachments for details.
Why do rescue skills make pages and patches disagree?
The 2023-05-30 patch states: Dimitri can automatically start a rescue within an area when needed, rather than only the player actively attempting self-revival as the old page described; Thiva strengthens reviving and comes with a cooldown; Kapella provides a shield and speed-related effects for rescues; Olivia becomes a shared single-target heal.
Old summaries on different character entries therefore cannot be mixed. This patch is itself historical material and does not mean it is the final mechanic for the 2026 India version; it proves at least one thing — “the official site can still open an old page” does not mean “the old page holds the currently correct skill”.
Practical advice when writing character pages: use the newest patch announcement as the skeleton, treat old page summaries as historical comparison, and label the version and date in the body.
Evidence level: Historical version — The rescue descriptions correspond to the 2023-05-30 patch and may have been changed by later updates.
Are Honor Score and behavioural rating the same thing?
Not entirely equivalent, and the official material is not fully consistent across time:
- A global patch published weekly Honor Score settlement plus instant feedback for voice reports: after a report the reported voice is muted, and a penalty notice may follow.
- OB47 introduced behavioural rating: a high rating can earn extra ranked/protection benefits, a low rating affects voice and ranked benefits; it also provided a custom-room quit penalty setting.
- A 2025 customer-service Honor Score explanation mentions a different settlement cycle again.
So “Honor Score” and “behavioural rating” must be explained separately by interface, version and penalty dimension, and ultimately the in-game FAIRGAME-related pages are authoritative.
There is also a common misconception: do not write in an FAQ that “reports never get feedback”. The customer-service article only says individual case details are not provided, while in-game report follow-ups may already notify. Customer-service replies, in-game feedback and public detection evidence are three different questions and cannot substitute for each other.
Evidence level: Global reference — The settlement cycle is inconsistent across official pages, which shows these materials cannot be stitched together across time.
Why do ranked maps and tiers keep changing?
- A 2023 patch put Purgatory back into ranked and temporarily removed Kalahari, showing that map rotation is not permanently fixed.
- Later patches added Platinum V and Diamond V to refine season resets, and introduced ranked goal prompts.
So a static tier order table, season reset table and ranked map list only holds when bound to a specific season. Any claim of a “fixed ranked map” should be questioned. Map changes are collected in Map history and the OB54 correction.
How should you handle conflicting old material?
Follow these four steps; it is more reliable than “take the newest one”:
- Find the first-party source: patch announcements and developer notes first, then customer-service documents, then media and video.
- Align the date: confirm which version and which day this description corresponds to, and whether a later announcement supersedes it.
- Separate regions: a global-version announcement does not mean the India version synced; write “global reference”, not “India-version rule”.
- Leave the gap: mark what you cannot verify as needing testing; do not fill it in with common sense.
Existing conflicts are collected in Conflicts and gaps record. The pace of change in economy and reward rules is covered in Reward economy and card draws.
Evidence level: Unverified — The current form of each mechanic above in the India client has not been verified item by item, especially effective dates and regional sync.

Still unverified:
- Whether each mechanic above is currently in force in the India version, and when it took effect: none of it has been checked.
- The current rules for character skills, skill slots, LINK and skill levels: only the historical evolution is confirmed, not the present state.
- The Gloo Maker’s current per-level caps and experience sources: whether it changed again after OB54 is unknown.
- The exact relationship between Honor Score and behavioural rating, and the current settlement cycle: official material is inconsistent across time.
- The ranked map pool and tier order: must be bound to a season; this page gives no fixed list.
- The interaction between Mr. Waggor and the maker: only known to be version-dependent, not tested.
Evidence level: Unverified — This page is only responsible for stating clearly “what changed and why”; it does not claim “what is true now”. The latter needs verifying item by item in the India client; see Research method and evidence levels for the method.
