Free Fire India skill system: slots, LINK and the combo layer
How Garena restructured the skill system from 2019 to 2023: skill slots, level caps, LINK and upgrade costs, and how to judge page-versus-patch conflicts.
This page is not about which character is strong, but about how the skill system itself changed. Between 2019 and 2023 Garena made four structural adjustments to the character system: the number of skill slots, the character level cap, whether upgrading costs currency, and LINK together with skill level differences were changed or removed one after another. Only by following that line can you tell which information in an old guide is already void. Everything here is a global-version historical record, and the current state of the India server (FFI) needs confirming in the client.
Which structural changes has the skill system gone through?
| Date | Official record | What it means for writing this material |
|---|---|---|
| 2019-12-10 Winterlands | Adds a fourth skill slot and adjusts upgrade and fragment costs. | Old guides that still list “how many fragments an upgrade costs” cannot be used directly on the current version. |
| 2021 World Series | The character level cap changes from 8 to 6; upgrading no longer costs Gold or Diamonds; awakened skills include the original skill’s effect. | “Level 8” and “paid upgrades” are historical states, not current rules. |
| 2023-01-11 OB38 developer blog | Skill slots open free by default, with combo recommendations and presets. | Old tutorials that teach “how much it costs to unlock a skill slot” no longer apply. |
| 2023-03-08 developer blog | Announces the removal of LINK, a switch to unlocking skills with Gold, and the removal of skill level differences. | Old tables that list full values per level-six skill cannot be treated as current skill data. |
The sources are 2019 Winterlands, World Series, OB38 character system notes and A new journey for characters.
The direction of these four adjustments is consistent: peel the cost of raising a character away from time and currency, and hand the difference back to “which skill you pick”. In early versions part of a character’s strength came from levels and investment; by 2023 the level differences were gone, LINK was removed and skill slots opened free, so the remaining variables are the skill itself and which few you bring.
Evidence level: Historical version — Each row of the table above only explains the rules at its own point in time. These are global announcements; they do not prove the India server synced to the same version, and they cannot be taken directly as the current rules in 2026.
Why can’t the “upgrade cost” in old guides be copied?
Because that cost structure has been dismantled by the official side, and thoroughly:
- The level cap changed: from 8 to 6, and then skill level differences were removed. Any step of the form “level this character up to 8” no longer means anything.
- Upgrading no longer costs Gold or Diamonds: the 2021 World Series announcement states that upgrading no longer consumes either currency, and it later changed to unlocking skills with Gold. The “Diamond upgrade” in old guides is doubly expired.
- Skill slots are no longer charged for: from OB38 in 2023 skill slots open free by default, and combo recommendations and presets are provided too. The old tutorial path of “save up first, then open slots” no longer exists.
- LINK was removed: the 2023-03-08 developer blog explicitly states the removal of LINK. Content that still talks about LINK bonuses is historical material.
So the fastest way to judge whether a character guide is old is not to look at the lineup it recommends, but at whether it talks about upgrade costs, LINK or level-six skill values. If all three kinds of content appear, it can basically be judged as written before 2023 or copied straight from an earlier version.
How should you think about skill slots and combos?
This site does not provide a numeric combo ranking, because the sources contain no current data that could be used for ranking. What it can give is a structured way of thinking that does not depend on specific numbers:
- Classify by effect type first, not by character name. Group the effects in the skill table into a few categories: information (marking, detection, exposing position), mobility (dash, teleport), protection (shield, damage reduction, force field, immunity to interference), recovery (healing, health regeneration, EP conversion), resources (in-match currency, Gloo Wall supply). Once classified, you can see at a glance which category you are missing.
- A combo fills a gap; it does not stack the same type. The official side built combo recommendations and presets into the system in OB38, which shows it treats “which few skills to bring” as a configurable layer rather than a contest of single-skill strength. Bringing three skills of the same type usually just does the same thing more extremely and does not cover the other thing.
- Watch for explicit limits such as “the effect does not stack”. Kapella’s healing boost and Notora’s vehicle healing both state that the effect does not stack, for example. That is a note on individual skill pages only and cannot be generalised into “no two skills of the same type stack”.
- Do not count pets in a character combo. Pets are a separate system with their own skills, see Pets.
- The mode changes the conclusion. The same skill is worth different amounts in BR and in limited-time modes; the official side adjusts modes separately in several patches, so “this combo is strong in some mode” must be tied to a mode and a version and cannot be stated as a blanket claim.
For the official description of each skill see Character skill table; that table deliberately writes no values, exactly so that combo thinking is not led astray by numbers of unknown origin such as “this skill adds some percent”.
When an old character page conflicts with a patch, which do you follow?
This is the most practical trouble in character material: an official page still opens and the text is still there, but the mechanic has been changed. Two typical cases.
Case one: Chrono. The older detail page, when describing the force field, said the player could shoot out of the field and that it carried a movement buff. The 2023 developer notes record it very directly: early force fields allowed shooting out, the ability was later removed, and it was used as the example of “changing the mechanic when a value tweak is not enough”. In other words, an old page that is still reachable can reliably contradict the current mechanic. The handling is to mark the old copy as a historical description and not use it as a guide.
Case two: the revive skill group. The 2023-05-30 patch states that inside Dimitri’s healing area a revive can start automatically when needed, rather than only the “player actively tries to self-revive” that the old page described; Thiva strengthens the revive and carries a cooldown; Kapella provides a shield and speed-related effects for reviving; Olivia moves to sharing single-target healing. If the old summaries of the four characters are mixed together, you get contradictory revive flows. This patch is also historical material and cannot be taken as the final mechanic of the India version in 2026 — but it is enough to prove one thing: “the official page still opens” does not equal “this text is the current skill”.
The same risk also appears on entries such as A124, Steffie, Xayne, Kenta, Joseph and Alvaro: the current page copy and the rework recorded in official patches do not match, and neither can replace the other. The official side has also adjusted skills such as Nairi separately (see the OB50 patch), which shows that a time gap between detail pages and patches is normal.
The suggested order is fixed as: latest patch → what the India client actually shows → character detail page text. Using it in reverse is where people trip. For how conflicts are logged see Conflict and gap log, and for the evidence grading standard see Research method and evidence levels.
Evidence level: Global reference — The judgements on Chrono and the revive skill group come from global developer notes and patches, not India-server testing; whether the India version has synced to the corresponding version is unverified.
Which conclusions must wait for the India client?
The following conclusions are never stated as fixed on this site, because first-hand evidence is missing:
- The current character levels, skill unlock method and skill slot state on the India server. The global version made structural changes in 2023, but that is a global record and cannot be applied automatically.
- Each skill’s current effect and values on the India server, including whether it still matches the official copy.
- Whether the skill slot cap, the number of preset slots and the combo recommendation interface exist — the official description covers global-version features, and the India version needs checking on site.
- Whether Chinese or localised skill names correspond one-to-one with the official English names.
- The rule differences between the Training Ground and BR. When testing, if the mode, version and pet are not fixed, the conclusion obtained cannot be used as a BR conclusion.
Filling these in needs client screenshots or recordings. Until then, this page is positioned as a structural explanation: it tells you what the system has changed, why old guides stop working, and in what order to judge when a conflict appears. For the release and account prerequisites of the India server see India server basics; for other changes at the mechanics level (Gloo Walls, revive, Honor Score) see Mechanics evolution.
